Northern Ireland Target Sports Association

Northern Ireland Post Office Small-Bore Rifle Club
(Branch of POST OFFICE SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB)

No record can now be found of when the club was originally formed, but from the memories of older members it is thought that the club was first formed in the early or middle 1930’s by a nucleus of well known shots in the post office, some of whom represented Ireland in international competitions.

On the outbreak of the second world war in 1939 the club’s activities were suspended for a time, activities were revived by the post office home guard detachment in 1942 as a means of training in the use of arms. It continued as a home guard club until the cessation of hostilities in 1945 when it was reconstituted and open to all members in the post office. The club’s headquarters and range were situated in the sorting office in the H.P.O., Belfast, until the needs of the postal service made the continued use of the sorting office as a part-time rifle range no longer possible. This was in 1948/49.

However at about this time a section of the then telephone area was accommodated in the custom house and permission was obtained to use the rifle range in the basement which was already used by the custom and excise rifle club. The custom house accommodation subsequently passed from the telephone area to the directors office and continued in use until the early 1960’s.

On the post office vacating the custom house the collector for Northern Ireland was approached as to the continued use of the basement range by the post office club and it was agreed, a situation which exists to the present day (1980).

Big Changes

The range premises were purchased on behalf of the membership in 2009 and during 2010 we completed the construction of 5 full-bore outdoor pistol ranges. It is our intention to construct a number of 25 metre, 50 metre and 100metre indoor ranges over the next few years at Buskhill.

The new 2,000 sq ft Club House has now been completed and now boasts a state of the art training room and also The Reload Shop located on the ground floor and on the 1st floor we will very soon be opening “Nevins Diner” serving breakfast, lunch and tea’s.
